About Our School

My English Tutor was founded by Lisa, an experienced primary school teacher and former Head of the Language Centre at Holmesglen TAFE. While working with adult students from non-English speaking backgrounds, she was constantly asked, “Where can I send my child for English tutoring?” These parents could see their children falling behind at school, but there were no specialised programs that met their needs. So Lisa started tutoring their children in the evenings after work.

As demand grew, Lisa knew these students needed more than just extra help. They needed a structured, research-based approach. Drawing on her experience and deep understanding of language development, she created her own curriculum based on explicit teaching, a method proven to be one of the most effective ways to teach foundational skills, particularly for students learning English as an additional language. (Studies show explicit instruction leads to faster, more sustained learning- especially in literacy.)
 

Eventually, Lisa opened a small centre to meet growing demand and slowly built a team. That’s where Alex comes in. Now General Manager and Senior Tutor, Alex has a background in Early Childhood Education, over a decade of tutoring experience, and a passion for both the English language and children’s mental wellbeing. She’s deeply committed to creating a warm, supportive environment where every child can feel safe, confident, and ready to learn.

Alex works closely with Lisa to ensure the program remains high-quality, engaging, and always focused on student growth.
 

 

Our Approach

We help children aged 3 to 14 build strong English skills and confidence. Our lessons are structured, fun, and carefully aligned with the Victorian curriculum. We focus on reading, writing, comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary using high-quality texts, step-by-step instruction, and proven teaching methods.

Every tutor at My English Tutor is a native English speaker with teaching experience or advanced study in education. But just as importantly, they are warm, encouraging and genuinely invested in your child’s success. We train all tutors in our method to ensure every lesson is consistent, effective and tailored to each student’s needs.
