The Importance of English for EAL Students

EAL students often do not read enough outside of their native tongue. This limits their understanding of vocabulary and the rhythms and structure of the English language.

Without competent English reading skills, children will struggle with English writing and comprehension.

Most parents of EAL students are unable to assist them with their schoolwork as they do not have an advanced enough level of English themselves.

By the time children reach upper primary levels, the range of vocabulary they require becomes much wider and more sophisticated. This increases 10-fold once a child is a secondary school level.

Schools cater to local students and make little allowance for those of non-English speaking backgrounds. Receiving tutoring can help to make up for this imbalance.

EAL children are embedded in English speaking culture but not immersed in the language. Without additional tutorage they do not have the skills required to function competently at school and in the wider community.

EAL students need long-term support to carry them through school. Parents should not expect a “quick fix” as the child is learning outside their native language.

With tutoring, your child will not only receive the tangible skills needed to improve their English speaking and writing skills but also a huge boost in confidence that comes with not struggling in the classroom.
